DECLARATION in OPPOSITION to the BAD SoHo BID Plan:
“Council Member Chin has stated that she cannot support the SoHo BID proposal, due to a lack of support from residents of the catchment area and surrounding blocks. Residents felt that the proposal lacked a focus on quality of life issues, and also posed some problems with regards to assessment of residential properties. The Councilmember recognizes that the character of SoHo must be maintained in any discussion of a BID in the area.”

I am an artist and have lived in Soho since 1973. I am very disappointed and shocked that Ms. Chin, our elected official with the charge to reflect soho’s community interests, has ignored the huge amount of Soho residents who have strongly expressed great opposition to the BID proposals.
Ms chin has clearly joined real estate developers, the only promoters of this BID,
and has abandoned the residents who will suffer from loosing the identity that this artistic community has created, as well as suffering from the deluge of street traffic and noise that will ensue in the Soho artist live work and residential environment.
As a government official, Ms. Chin’s voicing encouragement to support the bid proposal, despite the overwhelming rejection expressed by SoHo residents, businesses and most independent landlords, and shunned by community Board #2, is an outrageous action of flagrant denial to the community’s interests.
Co-ops on Broadway have repeatedly told Ms. Chin and the BID promoters that their chief objection is to the very creation of a self interest designed governmental entity that wants to “market” SoHo and control its development.
No SoHo BID recently filed a Freedom of Information request and it confirms our worst fears that the BID intends to eventually spread from Broadway to all of SoHo, from Lafayette Street to Sixth Avenue! This TAKEOVER is not in keeping with the promise of residential rights to quiet enjoyment of habitability, and the government officials who are misrepresenting constituent’s wishes, are in breach of fiduciary duty.

Amen to what Nina above has said. Why any elected official would ignore the desires of the majority of her constituents is beyond me. She’s elected to represent us, and should do that. Shame on you, Margaret if you do anything else.
